Hello,

I'm just trying out Zed and really enjoying it so far :-) Thanks for your great work on this Zef.

On my internet connected VPS I've just run:

curl http://get.zedapp.org | bash

Which successfully downloads zedrem.

./zedrem

runs successfully and I get a URL to paste. But when I paste this into the Zed project picker I get:

"URL does not seem to run a (recent) Zed server."

I've tried this on a couple of boxes with the same result. Any tips on how to troubleshoot? (Nothing relevant in zed::log)

(Latest Zed standalone, Linux 64bit)

That's very odd. What URL are you getting back? Are you behind a enterprise proxy of some kind?

Thanks for the quick reply! Here's a URL that's up just now:

No proxies as far as I know. I'm on a home internet connection and I'm trying to connect to some Digital Ocean VPS's.

Ok, better shut that down now, because I can use it to edit your files (so: it works here). What version of Zed are you using, the Chrome version or standalone, what's the version number (stated in the project picker at the bottom).

Also, can you check if you open that URL in your browser if it shows the top-level file listing of the file system you're opening?

Standalone - Linux 64bit. "You are running Zed version 0.12.1"

That works fine.

That's really odd... Would you mind trying this in the Chrome App version and see if you get the same result? If so it's a bit easier to debug there.

Thanks for helping with this. Chrome app works fine.

I just tried running:

./zed-bin instead of ./zed and I get some useful output (below)

Quick Google and it looks like I need a replacement libffmpegsumo.so

I should have said, I'm running (x)ubuntu 14.04.

Happy to use the Chrome app for now. Works great and I guess the config sync and Notes will be pretty handy :-)

Aha! It looks like it doesn't accept the remote.zedapp.org SSL certificate. Maybe I chose a provider that's too cheap :D Can you try this instead:

./zedrem -u ws://remote.zedapp.org:80

That should work fine, although it then operates over a regular HTTP/websocket connection which isn't ideal.

Yes - that works!

OT: trying out the Chrome app has made me realise that it remembers window size and location properly. The standalone Linux version I'm using doesn't remember window attributes. Let me know if you'd like this filed on GitHub issues or feel free to email if you'd like me to do any testing.

Thanks again for your help.

Happy it works, and yes, please file a ticket about the window size/position, that should work (and did in the past -- at least on OS X).

was this ever resolved?

i had a similar error, and found this thread. i can make it work with the method described here using port 80 (not secure), but would prefer not to do it that way.

i'm using a chromebook, and love the zedapp concept.

i have been editing via a github repository, but that does get a little tedious if that's the only way to edit files, as it results in lots of push / pulls, for tiny trivial changes.

Sorry about this, I’ll see if I can request and setup a new certificate somewhere next week.

Jonathan,

I am using zedapp on a Chromebook as well. And I agree, using it with github can be tedious at times.

My solution was to install zedd (Zed daemon) on a development server (my Raspberry Pi :) ) and SSHing to it to run apps (git CLI) and services (Apache, MySQL) to manage and test my source code. I like running zedd on the Pi instead of on my desktop, as it would sit there most of the time sucking up electricity and generating heat (and tempting me to waste time playing FPS games instead of coding). Using the Pi reduces my cognitive load :) .

I just bought and set up the new SSL cert. It seems to work for me, can somebody verify the issue is solved?

I am seeing this exact problem. Zedrem is running on a Raspberry Pi, and returned a zedrem URL - looks good. Using a Mac as the remote editor, I can paste the URL into a browser and see the top-level file listing, however the Open Zedrem Folder returns "Invalid Zedrem URL".
