Friends,

The richness of cultural traditions in Pernambuco, in Brazil’s Northeast, is the main thing that has drawn me there.  Forró is just one of the amazing kinds of music; there are, of course, more folkloric traditions like Cavalho Marino, Afoxé, Ilú, Coco da Praia, Repente, and, the subject of this workshop: Maracatú de Baque Virado.

I hope you’ll consider checking it out -  Of all the types of Brazilian drum traditions I’ve studied over the last dozen years or so, Maracatú still emerges as my favorite.

Please see the spiel below, and email me if you have any questions, or if you would like to volunteer. Feel free to pass this along to anyone you think might be interested.

Best,

Jake “Barbudo”
z’Bumba, Maracatú ‘Sei Lá’

Through movement, song, and percussion, (mostly the latter!) students will directly experience the elegant beauty and sheer power that has allowed this music to thrive for 150 years.

Some instruments provided – RSVP to reserve one, or bring a snare drum, shekeré, or large cowbell.
