API vs Automation Framework

Hi there,

I'm relatively new to ZAP and asked myself the question when I should use the API / daemon rathen than the Automation Framework?
I know I have full control over ZAP trough the API by using SDK's and implementation but what are the biggest advantages of the API over the framework?
Is this only the flexibility you get or also 'extra' functionality?

Could someone help me clearing this out? :)
