I think we should have a new ZAP homepage, as detailed here: http://code.google.com/p/zaproxy/wiki/NewHomePage

Feedback appreciated!

Cheers,

Simon

I prefer the simplicity of the 2nd URL over the first.

Keep in mind the it will be easier to build a site for tablets & other mobile browsing if the site is kept clean & simple.

Good point!

I'll add that to the requirements - the site should definitely work well on mobile devices as well as desktops.

Cheers,

Hi,

This is a great proposal, Simon. I'm already really excited about a new homepage. :)

Regarding the details, here are a few of my comments (in relation to the questions)
  • Does this proposal make sense, or do I need to explain anything better?

Yes, it does and seems awesome. The only thing that I didn't quite get is what will happen with the current wiki? Will all of it be moved to the new website. Or will we leave the 'internal' wiki as it is and just move 'users' content on the website?

  • Do you agree with the overall suggestion?
Sure! :)
  • Any preferences on the URL?
I'd go for the zaproxy.org option.
  • Other websites that could be used for inspiration?
  • Suggestions for improvements to the questions tree?
Well, wouldn't the Internal Details be better named into something like: Development ?
  • Suggestions for hosting?
I've recently seen a lot of projects using github.com Pages tool allowing organizations to make nice _static_ pages for their projects (http://pages.github.com/). Some advantages are:
  1. it's free and it has a set of already existing themes
  2. the pages are hosted in the repository so some things can be easily automated (e.g. generate wiki pages, downloads etc.)

Disclaimer: I haven't used them so far so what I've posted above is what I found online, without 1st hand experience.

Really excited about this and looking forward to helping it get built,
Cosmin

The current wiki will stay as is (unless its moved somewhere else).
I see the homepage as relatively static, and possibly with limited access control, so only a few people would need (be able) to update it.
While I want the wiki to be dynamic with loads of people contributing.

Nice - I've added that.

Yeah, I'm good with that.

I was wondering about github myself :)
I'll look into it more, but if anyone has any experience with github pages please shout!

Me too - thanks for your input!

Hi

Creating a new and cleaner homepage will definitely help users find what they need faster and with less frustration. I recognize some of the content growing pains that ZAP might be experiencing with growth and would love to help out with maturing OWASP/ZAP's online presence and the information architecture. I'm looking at the OWASP ZAP - Home TOC on Git and there are a few different kinds of content that could be grouped to help streamline the info.

Different kinds of content:
  • video tutorials
  • recorded presentations/workshops
  • slide presentations (these are very helpful for users that need to present to their organization, if that's what they are meant for)
  • FAQs and Tips&Tricks (could these be combined?)
  • instructions (This should be the main one and should come first)
  • promotional materials (ZAP's credibility should be highlighted)
  • affiliations (sponsors and supporters)
  • books and T-shirts for sale

There's a lot to work with, which makes for a 'relatively' straight forward content structure. I'm going to look deeper into GitHub Pages cause I've been impressed by some of it's UI features and I'm sure there is more I haven't seen. Whichever application that is chosen is fine. I concentrate on the words. Would that work with you guys?

Best,

Suzanne

Seem like a great place to start from my perspective.

Most of your suggestions seems spot on. For FAQs/Tips&Tricks keep in mind that the zaproxy wiki itself contains both ZAP usage info and developer info.
