A reminder that the UKZN Philosophy Seminar Series will be taking place this Wednesday (1 September) at 14.00 with a presentation from Richard Sivil:

‘Aesthetic transformations and the crisis utility value of art’.

In this paper I will explore the contributions that art and aesthetics could make to philosophical practice / counselling in general, and will consider the contributions it might offer in this time of the pandemic. I will explore a small selection of Western philosophical views on art and aesthetics, including Kant, Nietzsche and Dewey. This will reveal that these philosophers endorse different conceptions of art, and an array of aesthetic visions that are associated with their respective transformative projects. I will argue that incorporating these transformative projects into philosophical practice would significantly expand it in a number of ways; and that they present varying degrees of utility value in this time of the pandemic.
