Thank you, Chris (and Camilla). These are great topics building on your work on trusteeship. Looking forward to the submissions.

Dear David and colleagues

Thanks for sharing this timely call for papers.

I will most certainly be submitting an abstract soon to talk through a set of two papers currently under research with Camilla, following the trail of international trusteeship.

a. the Palestinian Scheme: the British Mandate, 1923-1948
b. Lugard's Dual Mandate: West Africa 1905-1925

The presented paper would trace our work on trusteeship to date for 5 minutes, to then give 10 minutes to each of these topics.

A paper for potential publication would then track operationalisation of the Mandate System in Nigeria and Palestine, possibly....
Or at least just focus on one of the two.

The broader plan is to write a book through 2026-7 - a genealogy of trusteeship, including chapters based on prior papers and chapters on the topic.

Hopefully Camilla will be able to join us in July, but either way we'll work on this together.

Many thanks for the invitation.

May I share with others?

Best wishes
Chris

Call for Papers:

Modern Empire – Power, Resistance, and Transformation in Africa

20-22 July, 2026

University of Johannesburg

Department of Politics and International Relations

Convenors: David Boucher, Bhaso Ndzendze, Bongani Ngqulunga

Overview

The legacy and contemporary manifestations of empire continue to shape global politics, economics, and culture. This conference seeks to interrogate the concept of modern empire through the lens of African experiences. The conference will explore how imperial structures—both historical and contemporary—have influenced African societies, and how these societies have responded, resisted, and reimagined their futures.

Paper givers may consider, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Colonial Legacies and Postcolonial Realities
Examining the enduring impact of colonial rule on governance, law, and identity in African states.
  • South Africa as a Case Study
Apartheid as a form of internal empire; post-apartheid transformations; South Africa’s regional influence.
  • Cultural Imperialism and Resistance
Language, media, education, religion, and the arts as sites of imperial power and anti-imperial expression.
  • Law, Sovereignty, and Empire
Legal frameworks as tools of imperial control and instruments of resistance.
  • Migration, Borders, and Empire
How imperial histories shape contemporary migration patterns and border regimes.
  • Decolonial Futures
Intellectual, political, and grassroots movements aimed at dismantling imperial structures and imagining new possibilities.

Please submit abstracts of your paper (250 words), along with a short bio, to dav...@uj.ac.za before 15 April, 2026. Decisions will be conveyed to prospective paper-givers by 30 April, 2026.
