Hello ZaPhil members,

I heard recently, from the son of the late D.C.S. 'Daantjie' Oosthuizen (former Professor of Philosophy at Rhodes from 1958 to 1969), that James Moulder, former Professor of Philosophy at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg (UNP), passed away in Australia a little over a year ago.

James Moulder was, as far as I know, at UNP from 1987 to 2004. His first philosophy job was at the University of Tasmania, followed by a position at Rhodes from some time in the 1970s until 1980. In 1981 and 1982 he was at the University of Natal, Durban, leaving that position to become special assistant to the Vice-Chancellor at UCT. He moved from there to head the PR department at UCT until going to UNP as Professor. He is the first recorded presenter of a talk at the UCT Philosophy Society (February 1982, on the topic 'How Philosophy Began'), and was highly regarded as teacher of philosophy.

There's a (probably partial) record of his publications on PhilPapers here:

Regards,

DS

James was at UNP until 1994. My apologies - David got the wrong date from me.

Though many regarded him as a philosophical maverick, he was also something of a visionary. His work on Africanising philosophy (and universities) in the late 80s early 90s is a case in point. He was a wonderful colleague at UNP, restoring philosophy to the map there and leaving a remarkable legacy. He was a sought-after speaker and consultant in the early 90s, meaning that he was regularly away; this led to Ron Nicolson's marvelous comment that the only difference between James Moulder and God being that God is everywhere, whereas James Moulder is everywhere but in the Philosophy Department.

Regards,
Simon

Dear David

Thanks for letting us know. This is a big shock.

I knew James very well and had the privilege of attending a number of PSSA conferences where he was a very popular speaker – speaking mostly without any notes, engaging his audience from the start, always done within his available time, and always very entertaining. He visited Stellenbosch quite often in the early 80’s and I got him to lecture to my Honours students on more than one occasion. He also was a good friend of Johan Degenaar; it is an ironic coincidence that they died in the same year. Although the details now escape me, he once told me of a game he invented for teaching freshmen philosophy – a game, as I understood it, based on the Rawlsian thought experiment of negotiating behind a veil of ignorance. Does anybody know more about that?

I am very sorry to hear of his death. He will be fondly remembered.

Regards

Anton
