Stellenbosch University is seeking applications for the post of lecturer in Philosophy. Please see details below.

This position forms part of the nGAP initiative and the incumbent will benefit from a reduced workload in the first three to four years. The additional time available will be dedicated to achieving the teaching and research development goals outlined by the nGAP.   


The incumbent can work towards the completion of either a PhD or a postdoc.


  • The incumbent will be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in the Philosophy Department through the following:

  • Teaching and administrating undergraduate modules;

  • Recruiting and supervising postgraduate students;

  • Conducting active research with sustained accredited publication in their research focus area/s;

  • Involvement in and contribution to the broader philosophy community (academic citizenship);

  • Applying for research grants;

  • Developing national and international research collaborations and networks;

  • Participation in administrative service delivery at departmental, Faculty and University level.


Job Requirements
  • MA in philosophy with a final mark of at least 70%;

  • Must be a South African citizen;

  • Must be 40 years old or younger;

  • An excellent academic record;

  • Teaching experience in philosophy on at least the level of teaching assistant at tertiary level;

  • A cover letter showing how the candidate's research and teaching interests will fit in with the Department;

  • Excellent communication skills in English.


Recommendations:
  • A research background that complements the Department's research focus areas (see above), especially African philosophy and European philosophical approaches;

  • Academic publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals;

  • Postgraduate supervision experience;

  • Evidence of engagement with the broader philosophy community.
