Bafu: A Kriol Way of Philosophizing
Antoine Gillett (Department of Philosophy, University of Connecticut)
Bafu is a Belizean Kriol term denoting clumsy or awkward movement. Although Belizean society tends to attach a negative connotation to this word, Yasser Musa, a Belizean artist, argues that when one moves away from that negativity, bafu becomes profoundly existential, pointing to a deep sense of trying always aimed at making life possible. In this essay, I build on Musa’s argument and explore the philosophical sense and salience of bafu as an expression of Africana philosophical reasoning through the analytic of potentiated double consciousness and its implications for the project of Black life.
