Dear ZAPHIL list members,

Here is a brief update on the ZAPHIL group/list membership.

The list currently has a little over 500 members. A few accounts are inactive because of bounced mail (which happens when people move and old email addresses stop working), but the ‘real’ membership is still over 500. Most are SA-based philosophers (staff, student, retired), and some are people outside SA who occasionally forward items of possible interest to their own lists and groups.

If anyone asks how to join the list, tell them to go to: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/zaphil

I also attach a one-page poster/flyer that I’d appreciate people displaying on office doors or notice boards.

I’ve been receiving increasing numbers (not that many, but a trickle) of requests from likely spam accounts. It can speed things up if anyone asking to join put in a brief explanation in the comment field (along the lines of “Philosophy grad student at Fort Hare” or “staff at UniZulu”. To be on the safe side, I’m declining join requests from accounts that look dodgy enough to me (e.g. addresses only associated with spam).

Remember: The list is not associated directly with any organisation, and is there for distribution of announcements of interest to academic philosophy in SA. (Events, jobs, calls for papers, tables of contents of local journals, or of issues with local focus, etc.) Occasional outbreaks of discussion and debate occur, but the list isn’t generally a chat room.

(The list used to be a ‘proper’ MAILMAN list, but UKZN IT division stopped operating the MAILMAN server, at which point the Google Group was the only quick way of salvaging the list that I had.)

Regards,

David
