Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr Casper Lötter, a former Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Philosophy at NWU until the end of 2025 and, more recently, an Extraordinary Research Fellow in the Focus Area: Social Transformation.

Dr Lötter was a valued member of our academic community and contributed meaningfully to the intellectual life of the School during his time with us. His research focused extensively on matters relating to correctional services, where he engaged critically with the ethical, social, and philosophical dimensions of incarceration and rehabilitation. Through this work, he sought to contribute to a deeper understanding of justice, dignity, and institutional responsibility. His list of publications is impressive, and can be viewed on his Google Scholar page here: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=c87Kmw4AAAAJ&hl=en

His scholarship and commitment to thoughtful engagement will be remembered with appreciation by those who had the opportunity to work alongside him.

On behalf of the School of Philosophy and Global Futures, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with all who knew and worked with him, and, in our case, especially Prof A Verhoef who worked very closely with him as his postdoctoral supervisor.

We are grateful for the time Dr Lötter spent as part of our scholarly community, and we honour his contribution to the field and to the life of the School, FHUM, FAST, and the broader NWU and Philosophical community.

Kind regards,
Prof Yolandi M. Coetser
