DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Playing an active role as an academic leader of the discipline at national and international levels;
  • Ensuring scholarly and professional education and training;
  • Advancing the Department’s research productivity and profile;
  • Taking a leading role in research and contributing significantly to the Department’s publications;
  • Expressed commitment to teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
  • Supervising postgraduate students at master’s and doctoral level.
     

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A doctorate in Philosophy;
  • International academic status and recognition by peers;
  • An established and proven research and publications record, appropriate to the post level;
  • A substantial teaching record and a commitment to teaching at all levels;
  • Significant experience in supervising the work of postgraduate students;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • An appropriate vision for the Department.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Strong leadership and communication skills;
  • Proven administrative and managerial capabilities;
  • Resource mobilisation, including fund raising.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Expertise in either African Philosophy, Continental Philosophy and/or History of Modern Philosophy;
  • NRF-rating.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
