You are invited to join our Departmental Seminar on Thursday 15 September, 10:30 - 12:00. The Microsoft Teams meeting link is at the bottom of the email.

Our presenter is a young scholar, Tshiamo Malatji, who would like to discuss their book, Subhominin. A short abstract follows:

The book, Subhominin, explains the concept of a subhominin, linking the concept to hauntology, dialectics and complementary dualism.

A subhominin is a subject considered by other subject-observers to be an object. The subhominin, therefore, comes into being as a subject through an internal process of self-recognition. The book argues that this must occur 1) because to be a subject requires recognition and 2) because of the absence of external recognition. The book uses this process of self-sublation by subhominin as evidence for the possibility of post-structure, since subhominin sublate from a state of being an object to being a subject. So, the argument for post-structure is developed from a mechanism developed within dialectics.

The book further argues that this process of sublation (developed from necessity) is possible within the framework of complementary dualism, which allows for movement between interrelated aspects of reality. This creates the environment for sublation. Post-structure is finally shown as this 'movement' between structure and non-structure, observable in subhominin. So, the argument for post-structure is also developed from explanations of reality developed within complementary dualism.

Still, the very concept of the subhominin is uneasy, which the book presents using various parallels to ideas developed within hauntology.
