Dear Friends, Colleagues and students,

You are warmly invited to attend a free public event:

What’s in a Poem? Exploring the Potential of Lyrical Language

Prof Catherine Botha (Professor of Art, Culture and Technology at UJ Philosophy) and Professor Andreas Dorschel (Professor of aesthetics and head of the Institute for Music Aesthetics at the University of Arts Graz (Austria) each present a poem. Prof Dorschel will present a work by the Austrian poet Ingeborg Bachmann (1926–1973) and Prof Botha a work by the South African poet Mongane Wally Serote (1944–).

Starting from these examples, the discussion will explore what lyrical language can uniquely achieve, even in a contemporary culture that often seems to leave little room for the patience and attentiveness that poetry requires.

The conversation will be followed by drinks and light refreshments on the balcony of the beautiful Dante Alighieri.

When: Thursday, 23 July, 17:30
Where: Dante Alighieri, 62A Houghton Drive, Houghton, Johannesburg
