The Department of Politics and Philosophy is making funds available to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to conduct research at the University of Fort Hare. The fellowship is valued at R300 000-00.


Description: We seek to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to work at the intersection of philosophy and political science, with specific reference to the relation between public governance and subjective agency within digitally mediated and globally networked socio-political realities. Preferred areas of research are preferably two (or more) of the following:

  •        Phenomenology / African Phenomenology
  •        Philosophy of Technology
  •        Political Science
  •        Critical Theory
  •        Posthuman / Post-Anthropocentric Approaches
  •        Cognitive Science

We may consider applications outside of these specified areas of research.  African, or broadly Global South approaches, are welcomed.

Requirements: The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in philosophy and / or political science. The candidate should be conversant in relevant philosophical frameworks, and the successful candidate’s doctoral thesis and/or subsequent publications will demonstrate competent engagement with relevant methods of theoretical engagement, or relevant inter-disciplinary work.

Conditions: Candidate to be based on any campus, as stipulated by the award conditions. By the end of the fellowship the awardee must produce at least 3 x accepted, accredited publication units.

Duration: The fellowship is valid for 12 months from the month of arrival and may be extended with evidence of good progress.
