Indifference and Objectivity: Phenomenological Reflections on Scientific Methodology
Ryan Roos (University of Fort Hare, South Africa)
Abstract
The proposed project explores the relationship between indifference, objectivity, and scientific methodology by analysing their shared themes. It argues that the conventional understandings of indifference can lead to problematic interpretations of how we engage with the world. In connection, within the scientific method, indifference is expressed as value-neutrality, which serves to minimize subjective biases that could distort the evaluation of knowledge. Objectivity, a key goal of science, is often seen as the removal of subjectivity in pursuit of neutrality. Using a phenomenological approach, this thesis explores the lived experience of indifference, offering a more refined understanding of how it informs the concept of objectivity in scientific practice.
