CFP: HER-STORICAL PERSPECTIVES IN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY

Editors: Dr. Amara Esther Chimakonam and Dr. Christian Idika

Overview

Mesembe Ita Edet inaugurated the concept of Her-storicity in a book chapter, “Women in the his-story of Philosophy and the Imperative for a ‘Her-historical’ Perspective in Contemporary African Philosophy” in African Philosophy and the Epistemic Marginalization of Women (edited by Jonathan O. Chimakonam and Louise du Toit, 2018: Routledge). His aim in this chapter is to draw attention to the fact that as different scholars try to develop African philosophy, her-storical perspective has largely been ignored or under-developed. It seems like African philosophy is riding on the crest of historicity, thus murdering whatever will be the perspective of African women to the discipline, leading to what he calls “herstorycide.” This book project picks up the gauntlet laid down by Edet for African philosophers, especially women, to dedicate more effort to providing the her-storical perspective, for which some critics have argued that there is nothing like such perspectives. Others have belittled such perspectives. It is an opportunity for African female philosophers, even African male philosophers, working in the diverse studies of African philosophy to make a contribution that will demonstrate the female perspectives and highlight the female voices in the development of knowledge.

We are calling on interested authors who will write from the her-storical perspective by doing the following:

1.      Identify, cite and engage with female African philosophers who have said something connected to the theme of discussion.

2.      Anticipate what the female perspective could be on a theme of discussion, then engage and interrogate it.

3.      Ensure that your contribution does not take into consideration the thinking and lifeworld of men alone without that of women.

4.      Contributions should not be biased towards men's orientation alone (male-bias) in African philosophy.

5.      The basic question is how does your contribution affect or represent or relate to women in a balanced way without being against men.
