ADVERTISEMENT: TEACHING ASSISTANT IN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY (1st Semester)

 

The UP Philosophy Department is seeking a part-time teaching assistant / assistant lecturer for the following course during the first semester of 2024.

 

FIL 110: Introduction to Philosophy

This is a core module in the Philosophy Department and is presented to first year students in the first semester of the academic year. The module is designed to introduce students to two of the main subfields of philosophy, namely metaphysics and epistemology, with reference to the work of a range of scholars from the Global South and the West. Students will become acquainted with the nature of philosophical reflection by exploring several classical philosophical themes in each subfield. Throughout the module there is an emphasis on developing those critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that are required in Philosophy, while students become acquainted with the power of critique as judgment and discernment. There are four 50-minute lectures a week attended by 300-400 students in addition to weekly tutorials.

 

The teaching assistant works closely with the lecturer to manage the tutor programme for the module. Weekly class tests, tutorial assignments, a semester test, the exam, and supplementary exam papers are set by the lecturer and the teaching assistant will be expected to facilitate some related organisational tasks. In collaboration with the lecturer, the teaching assistant is responsible for some of the marking load of assessments. The course content and material are set by the lecturer and the teaching assistant will be expected to be closely familiar with the content and also teach on a weekly basis.

 

Important dates:

The appointment period is 01 February – 15 July 2024. The academic year commences 19 February 2024. The exam period is 8-27 June 2024.

 

Minimum Requirements: A Masters Degree in Philosophy; tutoring and teaching experience with large groups and ability to work with tutors; ability to instruct philosophical ideas to those unfamiliar with them. 

Recommendation: Solid background in Metaphysics and Epistemology, an enrolment in or completion of PhD in Philosophy.

PART-TIME TEMPORARY/ASSISTANT LECTURESHIP IN

PHILOSOPHY OF MEDICINE (1st Semester)

The UP Philosophy Department is seeking a part-time, assistant/temporary lecturer to instruct the following course during the first semester in 2024:

 

FIL 155 Introduction to Philosophy of Medicine

This semester module is compulsory for all Medical Science students and some students in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. This module consists of two components: firstly, a philosophy of science component which provides an introduction to scientific reasoning and philosophical debates on scientific method; and secondly, a philosophy of medicine component which focuses on the relation between causation and the concept of disease and on the nature of evidence-based medicine.

There is one 50-minute lecture a week (repeated once) attended by 600-700 students divided into two groups. There are also weekly tutorials. The lecturer also manages the tutor programme for the module. Weekly tutorial assignments, 2 semester tests, the exam, and supplementary exam papers are set by the lecturer. The lecturer is responsible for the marking of all assessments except the tutorial assignments, although tutors may help with marking of short questions in tests and exams. The course content and material are set with some scope for minor changes.

ADVERTISEMENT: ASSISTANT/ TEMPORARY LECTURESHIP IN MORAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY (1st Semester)

 

The UP Philosophy Department is seeking a part-time assistant/ temporary lecturer to instruct the following course during the first and second quarters of 2024.

 

FIL 251 and FIL 252: Introduction to Moral and Political Philosophy

These quarter modules are taught in the first two quarters of the year and are compulsory for some students enrolled in the Faculties of Economic and Management Science, EBIT and Natural and Agricultural Sciences. In this module students are equipped with an understanding of the moral issues influencing human agency in economic and political contexts. In particular, philosophy equips students with analytical reasoning skills necessary to understand and solve complex moral problems related to economic and political decision making. We demonstrate to students how the most important questions concerning the socio-economic aspects of our lives can be broken down and illuminated through reasoned debate. Examples of themes which may be covered in the module include justice and the common good, a moral consideration of the nature and role of economic markets on society, issues concerning justice and equality, and dilemmas of loyalty. The works of philosophers covered may for instance include that of Aristotle, Locke, Bentham, Mill, Kant, Rawls, Friedman, Nozick, Bernstein, Dworkin, Sandel, Walzer, MacIntyre, Bujo, Wiredu, and Gyekye. This course is designed to train students in the critical analysis of ethical dilemmas that influence human agency in both local and global economic and political contexts.
