Resistance and Emotion Workshop
22-23 SEPTEMBER 2026 | Hybrid Event

In an era of deepening global inequalities and new forms of political contestation, questions about the emotional dimensions of resistance—what fuels it, sustains it, and transforms it—have never been more pressing. While existing scholarship has examined themes such as affective injustice (Srinivasan 2018), emotion and action (Carman 2018), and the use of provocative media in advancing social and political agendas, sustained interdisciplinary engagement with emotion and resistance remains limited. This workshop seeks to fill that gap by fostering dialogue across disciplinary boundaries and centring voices from the Global South.

 

We invite contributions that critically interrogate the constraining and empowering dimensions of emotion in various contexts of resistance. Possible themes include, but are not limited to:

• Emotions such as anger, hope, fear, and solidarity in motivating resistance
• The affective dynamics of individual, collective, and transnational struggles
• Emotional labour and affective injustice in activist movements
• Art, performance, and other affective expressions of resistance
• The politics of empathy, shame, or love in social change
• Psychological, phenomenological, or ethical accounts of affective resistance
• Emotion, decolonisation, and epistemic injustice
• Intersections of gender, race, and affect in resistance practices

Abstract length: 300–500
