The African Centre of Epistemology & Philosophy of Science (ACEPS), part of the Philosophy Department at the University of Johannesburg, invites applications for 2026, for Honours, MA (research) or PhD on any topic in epistemology, social epistemology, feminist epistemology, or queer theory. Projects around Epistemic Reparations, Injustice, and Decolonisation, as well as the Epistemology of AI (all broadly construed) are particularly welcome.

Funding is available to cover fees and a research assistantship depending on performance. In addition, ACEPS, through its links to the Philosophy Department at UJ, provides opportunities for paid teaching and tutoring, which go a long way to support living expenses and gain valuable experience! 

ACEPS aims to turn out internationally competitive Postgrads with impressive CVs. Successful candidates will be expected to be part of the vibrant life of the centre, to attend all talks, writing retreats and work-in-progress events.

You should definitely join us if you are looking for:

  • Access to a vibrant and extensive international network of experts and visitors to engage your work
  • Attend and present at local and international conferences
    • You publish 1 paper a year, ACEPS will send you to an international conference
    • All ACEPS Postgrads went overseas this year, and attended at least one national conference
  • Getting published in international journals
    • ACEPS will help get you there
  • Flourishing through weekly reading groups and writing retreats
    • Gain experience and confidence to write, present and comment on others work!
  • Experience at running conferences, edit a book or special issue
    • Looks good on your CV
