The ISCIA Seminar: Grappling with Complexity

“The complexity of leveraging change in ‘a broken metro’”

Gary Koekemoer (Philosophy,  Nelson Mandela University)

Vulindlela Nyoni (School of Visual and Performing Arts, Nelson Mandela University)

AIM (Abantu Integrity Movement) is a recently formed resident’s movement in Gqeberha, which has registered as a political party in an effort to contest the upcoming municipal election in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (NMA). As secretary-general of AIM, Gary Koekemoer has played an integral role in developing the vision and aims of the party along the lines of the complexity theory that underpins his PhD thesis, entitled “Race: Changing the Conversation”. In line with this problematic of complexity and race, his political interests focus on the possibility offered by complexity theory for changing the conversation about urban decay and renewal in the still predominantly racially segregated NMA (of which the city of Gqeberha forms a part). In this presentation Vulindlela Nyoni, a complexly dis/located Gqeberha resident and Professor of Visual Art at Nelson Mandela University, will engage in a conversation with Gary Koekemoer his experience in the past few months of the complexities involved in any effort to leverage change in what he sees as “a broken metro”.

Gary Koekemoer is enrolled for a PhD (Philosophy) at Nelson Mandela University and serves as secretary-general of AIM. Prof Vulindlela Nyoni is the Head of the department of Visual Arts and a PhD candidate in Philosophy/Aesthetics at the Nelson Mandela University.
