AGCLE Bursaries 2019

 

The Allan Gray Centre for Leadership Ethics at Rhodes University (hereafter AGCLE) is offering postgraduate funding for highly promising Honours, MA and Ph.D. students from any discipline keen to work with a closely knit team of people towards the common goals set out briefly below. 

 

The following scholarships are on offer: 

·         2 Honours degrees (R70 000)

·         3 Masters degrees (R80 000), and

·         1 PhD (R120 000)

Suitable applicants are invited to send a copy of their 

(1) CV, 

(2) two referee reports, 

(3) academic transcripts, and 

(4) a short proposal of no more than 1500 words explaining how the proposed research or, in the case of honours degrees, continued study, aligns with the goals of the AGCLE to pgfu...@ru.ac.za by 30 November 2018.

 

The AGCLE is a teaching and research-focused centre, run by philosophers. Our work involves developing and teaching ‘IiNtetho zoBomi: Conversations about Life’ (IZ hereafter), which broadly stated aims to improve students’ awareness of themselves as ethical agents living among others in challenging circumstances. 

 

The research done at the AGCLE focuses primarily on topics that are pertinent to IZ—research on ethical agency (integrity, authenticity, autonomy, and so on), moral blindness (and the various cognitive, ideological and structural forces that impede ethical agency), consciousness-raising (and the feminist, intersectional, and critical race theorists behind this movement), epistemology (doxastic norms and evidence-resistant beliefs) and of course those pertinent social issues facing us in our context. Our work also extends beyond this focus as well to issues pertaining to the state of Higher Education today, including but not limited to the discipline of philosophy.

Students awarded funding for 2019 will register in their home department at Rhodes and will be supervised (or co-supervised) by a member of the AGCLE academic staff. A condition for the bursary is that students register full-time (in attendance, i.e. reside in Grahamstown) while studying for degrees funded by the AGCLE.
