Let me preface by saying that I know EAS 6.4 will not work with Exchange 2013.  But, if you were to move a mailbox full of stubs from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013, would IIS retrieval still work and show the attachment?  We are looking to move from EAS to native Exchange archiving and obviously part of the migration will be moving the mailbox and then migrating the EAS messages to the archive mailbox. I'm just wondering if during the migration and before the stubs have been deleted, would retrieval work for the end user from Outlook?

Yes it should work OK since all IIS is doing is retrieving the message. The only thing you need to worry about is permissions. If you are changing the ODN of the mailbox when moving it then you will need to update the EAS DB to have the new ODN string for mailbox otherwise IIS will not be able to match request with the user in EAS DB.

Migration of data back into Exchange will be a pain using the EAS restore options – I would consider using third party tools such as TransVault

EAS has an update that will work with 2013 (i have installed it).   Retrieval does indeed work with 2013, No archiving or EAS admin functions will work.

Nice Rick!  Can you tell me the details of the update?  Is it an update to EAS 6.4.1?

Sorry Janet, I jumped the gun I was thinking 2010 SP3

New in EAS 6.4.1
The following enhancements are included in EAS 6.4.1.
 Added support for Windows 8.
 Added support for Windows Server 2012.
 Added support for Microsoft Exchange 2010 SP3.
 Due to changes in Exchange, information about Mail Users must be accessed using LDAP. With this change, the following settings must be configured in the EAS Admin.
 Settings > EAS Options > View > Exchange LDAP Settings
 Settings > EAS Options > Parent Specific > Exchange LDAP Settings

However the stated support policy is 6 months from release date...   I believe that is still in place thru the end of life...

Thanks Janet. We are definitely going with a 3rd party tool for this migration but so far I have not seen where either company that we've looked at really has a good solution for accessing the messages that are archived during the migration period which will take quite some time to complete. We're looking at Transvault and RAND Secure Archive. Just thinking out loud here but I wonder if it would be better to stand up a new exchange 2010 archiving DAG and have the 3rd party do the migration on Exchange 2010 and then move both primary and archive mailboxes to 2013 after the EAS migration is complete.

So your plan is to dump everything back into Exchange?  No new archiving tool?  That will be a huge bloat.

It has taken time but the Autonomy / HP Consolidated Archive (ACA) tool is making great leaps and bounds forward and it has a conversion tool.

Not sure what you mean about accessing the messages that are archived – by configuring EAS IIS this should work OK anyway.

If you are thinking of deploying archive mailboxes in Exchange 2013 then I think the best way would be to set up a quick test environment and go for:

·         Move mailbox

·         Update ODN in EAS (if you need to)

·         Use TransVault to migrate data where shortcut exists to live mailbox

·         Use TransVault to migrate data where shortcut does not exist to archive mailbox

·         Delete existing shortcuts

You might also want to migrate leavers data to PST files just to keep a copy
