Cross-site retrieval with Anonymous Access disabled

We run a multi-site EAS set-up, and with anonymous access enabled, cross-site retrieval works by specifying the URL of a remote IIS server in the local EASSERVERS table.

 

HP are saying that if Anonymous Access is disabled, then there is no way to get cross-site retrieval to work.  However, I have got it to work by specifying a DSN filename in the ODBCSOURCE column of the EASSERVERS table.  Unfortunately, I have now determined that this is causing problems with "remote" DOCSERVERIDs getting cached on the "local" IIS server, causing subsequent local retrievals to start to fail.  Therefore, I have had to abandon this method.

 

Has anyone ever managed to get this to work in a fool-proof way?
