Hi, it’s been a while, compliments of the season.
I thought you might be interested in a discussion I am organizing for editors/gatekeepers and other civic actors on social service delivery and accountability on Tuesday February 6 from 14.00hrs – 16.00hrs.
The talk to be presented to media practitioners would situate Zambian service delivery issues in the country’s public resource management framework. The main aim would be for editors to understand the centrality of the media in improving accountability by asking targeted accountability questions that are underpinned by a strong technical understanding of the public resource management system of the country, and how it is the linked to the service delivery issues the media routinely report on.
The aim is to empower media practitioners to understand the link between budgetary choices and the standard of living citizens can expect. Zambians need to understand that their enjoyment of social-economic rights is very well linked to the way public resources are managed, so in this regard the media must give the public an understanding to demand a minimum acceptable standard of services. In the absence of this, citizens will continue to access services well below the standard a prudent management of public resources can afford.
The discussion will follow the structure of the discussion forums that the Economics Association of Zambia used to have. So, a presentation by a facilitator , in this case Laura Miti, Executive Director of ACA, followed by an off the record frank discussion.
I am inviting you or a senior member of staff to this meeting as I think you will appreciate being one step ahead of news reporters who are currently undertaking our investigative journalism trainings.
I think this is really interesting don’t you? Let me know if you or your staff is able to attend and I will make the necessary arrangements to have your cleared.
Look forward to seeing you.
