Down memory lane. Old timers, were you there?

“See How Clean Kitwe was, this picture overlooks Kitwe Central Hospital( Taken from Silicosis area), Take note of the lanes which took care of cyclists and the big island.
Today you can only talk of utter filth in kitwe. A lot of work needs to be done to change the mindset to make "keep Zambia clean" meaningful”.
“Mindset” is the keyword here. Plus the lack of continuity.
We should have at least tried to find a way of controlling the influx from the rurals at independence. I feel we should have continued allowing in only those assured of getting jobs.
What happened to my Mindolo/Wusakile is still a nightmare up to today. Those houses and toilets were meant for families only. Freedom of movement overwhelmed the whole system.
And unfortunately this lack of continuity was to be repeated in 1991 after KK. Everything to do with KK became taboo.
I shudder to think of what would happen if a new party comes in this year. All schools, hospitals and roads done by this government might just be closed.

May be this can help Humphrey
In Northern Rhodesia it was illegal/jailable for any native to be found in town canter who had no Situpa i.e valid employment card from the labor office.
If any man had to visit town from the village, they first got an invitation from their relative who was working in town. This invitation was then presented to the chief who issued a travel permit stipulating the period which the villager will spend with the relative in town. With that permit the villager would be allowed to be in town for the stipulated period.
During colonial rule the white man would from time to time visit villages to check on a number of things including the village family register which was entered and kept by the village headman. The village register will have names and details of each faily including deaths i.e wife or wives and children.
During inspections by this white man..who apparently also colleted tax for her Majesty the Queen's government from villagers....
. If you didnt pay tax, you went to jail
. it was punishable with a jail term for a family to have a house with no toilet...the father went to jail
. It was punishable with a jail term or umulima chipuba for a family to be found with no food in the granary. (you worked for Government of Chief)
. It was punishable by umulima chipuba if you were found with no field to grow crops
. It was punishable by jail term if you kept school going children at home without enrolling them. (The MMD should bring back this law)
. It was punishable by jail term for anyone to put up a house without first putting up a toilet
So you can guess what happened immediately we chased the whites.
. Our colleagues in Eastern province still use the bush to relieve themselves...pigs often follow as escorts..but please dont ask me what pigs go to do
. Townships with no sanitation faculties, nor means of livelihood sprang up...i.e Kalingalinga, John Laing, Mandevu, Zingalume, Chipata compound
(fortunately there is no Chinsali Township anywhere along the line of rail)
. we recorded the first cases of chorea...immediately after we abolished colonial rule.
. We recorded the first cases of food for work in Eastern Province
. We had the first cases of widows...and witnessed the coming up of orphanages
It must also be observed that during colonial rule we neither had widows nor orphans.

which one is better Zambia or Northern Rhodesia?
HRH,
Interesting reading. Makes me ponder, then why did we fight for independence?

The choice was between being free to make our own decisions even wrong ones and being second class citizens in so-called abundance.
We were hardly free to use the clean facilities on those photos.
I think we should let him continue. My fear is that new guys are going to scrap all the ongoing projects as per tradition.
History is my witness. It happened in ’91. PF/UPND definitely won’t allow anything MMD to continue.
