Communicating for Results
Organizations are a collection of individuals with different specialties and talents that should be harnessed to achieve common goals. To accomplish this requires that people communicate effectively among each other. Communication only takes place when the intended purpose is achieved.
Poor communication skills contribute to poor performance in organizations. At the heart of this is interpersonal communication. Most of us assume that people will act upon what we require of them. We normally do this without taking into account barriers that may exist. However, for us to send the message home and obtain our desired results, it is imperative that we eliminate any perceived barriers in communication. Despite our good intentions, people will not act upon our demands if we continuously communicate under the assumption that people understand and will act as required. Some causes of barriers in communication include:
- Knowledge gaps
- Language
- Cultural differences
- Timing
- Motivation and attitude
- Relationship (Trust)
- Noise (clutch words i.e. um/ah, you know, look)
To be an effective communicator, clarify what you want done and why it is important. Make sure that the environment is clear and well explained so that the person for whom the communication is meant can act with a minimum of uncertainty. Effective communicators create meaningful working relationships and work to eliminate barriers that affect communication with their teams.
The importance of effective communication cannot be over emphasized. Let’s face it, we are constantly communicating knowingly and unknowingly. Our ideas, our vision of how things could be; our dreams and aspirations must be effectively articulated to the people that will help us work to realize them so that they understand our expectations of them. Misunderstandings arise were expectations are not clear.
Communicate with purpose and always be sure that the communication is complete. Confirm through paraphrasing and asking questions. You cannot afford to make assumptions. To be effective in communication requires relentless practice and mastering of the art.
Thanks to Toastmasters, we can all become effective communicators and monitor our progress as we participate in various leadership and speaking opportunities during meetings.
