MultiChoice Africa today named Samsung Electronics SA as the third
manufacturer of its digital IRD (integrated receiver decoder) for the South
African and African markets. Samsung, which is one of the world's largest
electronic consumer goods companies, is the first Korean manufacturer to
be licensed to produce the now fully-accepted digital box and speculation
is that other major Far Eastern players will follow, bringing with them
production of large volumes and increased downward pressure on prices.
Commenting on behalf of MultiChoice, chief executive officer, Hans
Hawinkels said: "We are very happy with the deal concluded with Samsung and
believe it to be in the interests of the consumer that competition in the
production of this equipment is increased. Already the price of the
equipment has dropped about 30% since the MultiChoice DStv service was
launched in October
1995 despite the weakening of the Rand over the same period making the real
terms price-drop even greater."
Initially the Samsung IRD, called the Satellite Stealth Digital Receiver,
will be produced in Korea and imported for the South African market, but
the possibility of Samsung adding the IRD to its line-up of products
manufactured in South Africa has not
been ruled out.
Speaking on behalf of Samsung, Michael Millsap, MD of Three Sixty
Marketing, Samsung's advertising agency said: "The Satellite Stealth
Digital Receiver provides the consumer with next-century technology today.
It is the product of one of the world's largest research and development
departments, with over 15 000 researchers. We expect the first shipment of
the Satellite Stealth Digital Receiver to be ready for distribution by
mid-November. It will be available from all major retail outlets and
directly from installers." Millsap went on to say that an aggressive
marketing campaign had been designed around the launch of the product.
When asked whether the current special price of R3999 would increase after
the Christmas marketing period, Hawinkels said that the existence of the
world standard for digital, MPEG-2/DVB, made it possible for MultiChoice to
license multiple manufacturers which ensuree the workings of free market
forces.
For this reason, he said he believed that the price would at least be
maintained at this level in the new year.
The MultiChoice DStv bouquet now offers 27 television services, 6 radio
services and 40 audio services still for the launch subscription price of
R175 per month. There are also a number of stand-alone niche market
services, which are available for separate subscriptions.
