Howdy

I noticed during ER last night that both the green and orange
lights on my M-Net decoder were lit when the program was being
broadcast. Does this mean that it is in stereo, and if so how
do I get the stereo from my decoder (it is a Delta 9000) to
work?

There only appears to be one output on the decoder, and from my
handbook it says that it is a 6 Pin DIN Connector. Only 4 of the
pins appear to do anything, and they are listed as:

1. +12 V d.c. (1mA)
2. Video Out (1 V p-p into 75 ohms)
3. Earth (ground)
4. Audio Out (into 10 k ohms)

I cannot see how a stereo sound can be extracted from this decoder.

I noticed this once during a broadcast of some musical concert,
but thought it must be a problem with my decoder. Interesting that
it happens during a show like ER. I have the same M-Net decoder,
and I am sure that we have already discussed in this newsgroup
that the old M-Net decoders cannot provide stereo sound :-(

This is true, I get MNET via satellite and it seems that quite a few
shows are being aired in stereo on the MNET channel - Home
improvements is another regular. Unfortunately movies are still being
censored causing the stereo to be lost (take my word for it, I am not
posting a detailed explanation about this again).

We were told a while back that DStv are looking at airing MNET sitcoms
during open time in stereo via satellite (MNET are unable to do this)
but to date *nothing* has come of this.

If you are lucky enough still to find a movie without any, heaven
forbid, BAD LANGUAGE in it, MNET will air it in stereo terrestrially
and via satellite - an example of this was BAtman Forever on the MNET
channel.

Unfortunately I do not have my satellite tv guide this month but I was
told that BRAVEHEART is going to be aired in dolby surround - now I
don't know if this is on MM channel or on MNET channel (via satellite)
tonight (Sunday).

You can't do it on the Delta 9000, unfortunately. The newer Delta
9000+ has an additional 5-pin DIN connector which provides left and
right audio output as well as a video and mono audio (why MONO) audio
input.

The "mono" audio input is there for convenience only. When
you connect the IRD to a satellite receiver, you don't even
use this input. IRDETO has sound-instead-of-sync, and you
use the baseband output from your satellite receiver into
pin 4 of AV2 (the 180 degree DIN), and the stereo audio is
extracted from the unclamped, unfiltered and de-emphasized
baseband.

Brian the "newer" Delta 9000 plus was obsolete a year ago.

Panasonic now only make *one* decoder for M-Net, the ComCrypt
4000. As with the Delta 9000 Plus, it comes with two DACs, and
is sold in two formats:

1) Without the remote control - R 749.00
2) With the remote control - R 849.00

Although there is a R 100 difference, there is *NO* difference
with the IRD - it still uses the old IRDETO terrestrial encryption,
and you can buy the remote separately for R 90.00 later if you
wish.

The problem with the ComCrypt is the fact that for the first
time since the Compact Delta, this IRD has no ability to adjust
it's volume control setting - but you can mute the audio.

It now has two SCART connectors on the back - one marked VCR
and one marked TV.

Little trick here. If you have one which is disabled, and you
connect a SCART to the VCR connector, wire the audio output
to your HiFi, and switch it off, you'll get *unscrambled*
M-Net audio! The absolute heart of the IRDETO scrambling
system blown because of a bug oversight! I hope you're reading
and weeping M-Net. Stupid Gits!

But you're quite right Brian. Only the Delta 9000 plus (which
is no longer sold), and the latest ComCrypts can decode M-Net's
*very* occasional terrestrial stereo broadcasts, although all
the M-Net decoders ever sold (from the original MUD) display
both LEDs when a stereo broadcast is in progress.

I've been actually bugging MNET about this
Where do I get a wire for the 9000+ 5 pin connector that gives me stereo.

I bought a plug, which comes through OK, but its definely MONO.

If anyone know what I need, please email me directly.
