Crusaders won the Olympic Toyota Dewar Shield after their hard-fought
battle out on the bluff against Harlequins yesterday.
Saders, who had to win after Collegians had accounted for College Rovers
in midweek, managed to collect their full quota of points.
Harlequins 20 (20)
Crusaders 31 (14)
In yet another game of two haves this season, Crusaders earned
themselves a good win against all odds in Durban's own House of Pain on
the Bluff, outscoring the home side by four tries to two.
Quins looked very good in the first half and one couldn't blame the home
crowd for thinking that the shield was theirs for the taking.
However, Saders came back in the second session to secure their
well-earned, with their tries going to Brian Liebenberg (two), Lionel
Berry and Clint van der Westhuizen. Glen Anthanassiou kicked four
conversions and a penalty.
Quins' points came from tries by Neil Thompson and Lodie van Staaden.
Trevor Wright added two penalties and two conversions.
College Rovers 12 (0)
Collegians Tech 26 (21)
After running away in the first half Collegians, who had to win to stay
in the hunt for the trophy, were expected to win comfortably.
However, Rovers, who were desperately in need of match practice leading
up to the start of the national club championships, finished strongly to
outscore the visitors in the second half.
Try scorers for Collegians were Peter Whiting, AC Prinsloo, Rowan Morgan
and Etienne Viljoen, Dean Hayden landed three conversions.
|Trevor Boynton and Matt Pennefather dotted down for Rovers with Udo
Goedeke kicking a conversion.
DHS Old Boys 47 (12)
Iscor 7 (0)
Old Boys saved their best performance for last. Fielding a number of
their Frank Norris Under-21 winning side, ran in seven superlative tries
to show that they will be a force next season.
Their tries were scored by Jason Liesegang (2), Simon Forst (2), Leonard
Lotz (2) and Warren Howell. Jason sharman added two penalties and the
three conversions.
Sakkie van der Merwe scored Iscor's solitary try, converted by Dickie
Rautenback.
Martizburg Blues 10 (5)
North Coast Rhinos 21 (14)
The Zululanders finished their Dewar Shield campaign on a high note in a
hard-fought battle at Woodburn Stadium.
The draw for the Castle Lager Murray Cup and the other kockout
competitions under the sanctin of the Natal Rugby Union takes place at
King's Park on Tuesday evening.
College Rovers drew their opening match in the SuperSport national club
championships when they took on South Western Districts championships
Oudstshoorn.
Oudtshoorn 19 (6)
College Rovers 19 (7)
Rovers arrived in Oudtshoorn to play in the most horrendous conditions
to gain two valuable points.
Who would have expected rain in Oudtshoorn right in the middle of
winter?
But with Rovers trailing 16-7 with 15 minutes to go, they fought back
gamely, only a disallowed try from Wildebeest winger Graham Hayley
preventing them from snatching victory.
Rovers tries were scored by Garth Wakeford, converted by flyhalf Udo
Goedeke, who also kicked four penalties.
Oudtshoorn's points were all scored by flyhalf 'Makka' Swart.
Rovers play Crusaders Tech (EP) in Durban next weekend.
