Malia Brooks, 32, was a teacher at Garden Grove Elementary
School in Simi Valley, California, when she was accused of
committing lewd sexual acts on a student under the age of 14.
Brooks had been employed with the school district since 2004 and
was considered an exemplary teacher.
In February 2013,Simi Valley Unified School District were
informed about a possible inappropriate relationship between
Brooks and a student. They turned the information over to police.
Investigators determined that an alleged relationship had gone
on for four months, starting in late 2012.
On June 13, 2013, Brooks was arrested and charged with one count
of a lewd act upon a child, one count of oral copulation of a
person under 14 and three counts of genital penetration by a
foreign object with a person under 14 years of age.
She originally pleaded not guilty, but on June 17, she changed
her plea to guilty. Brooks' attorney told NBC Los Angeles that
his client suffers from mental illness and is now in treatment.
Brooks remains in custody. Her bail was set at $2 million
because of concerns that she could be a flight risk.
