After working well for 2 weeks, the SAIX news server is on the blink again,
with timeouts at every attempt to connect.

I agree. The SAIX news server and textnews.saix.net both have timeout
problems. I even added NNTP:119 to my router in an effort to get the
news to download properly. It timesout within about 10 to 15 seconds, so
frustrating. I have asked them WHEN are they going to increase capacity
and of course they always tell me they don't have any problems. DUH! Of
course they dont! They're on the hub so they don't have to contend with
a million users downloading movies. I wish those people who do download
movies would give others a chance to download their stuff too!
BTW, I love your point of view on many subjects. The reason I use a
pseudonym and a false e-mail address is so that I can say what I like
without fear of retaliation!

For what it's worth, I'm writing this at 8:45 am on Saturday 26 July 2008.
I managed to download bodies from headers downloaded last night about an hour
ago.
When my replies will actually get posted is anyone's guess.

And I'm reading what I wrote at 11:01 am on Monday 26 July 2008
So it took more than 48 hours to reach me -- the times are getting longer and
longer.

>Hi Steve, why do you call Pretoria Tshwane? Tshwane is like a corruption
I don't.
Pretoria is part of Tshwane,
news.motzarella.org
Free, Fast, Reliable (so far!)
I found it after I changed from Telkom 56K dialup to Vodacom (no ADSL in my
town yet).
Vodacom doesn't have a news server at all and I refuse to use Google Groups!

Thanks..
If the problem goes on much longer I'll consider it.
Yes, I know. Pretoria (city & suburbs) are part of the Tshwane
Metropolitan Council - as Bloemfontein is part of Mangaung Metro
Council, but is Port Elizabeth called IBayhi or Bloemfontein called
Mangaung? So why does SABC3 news say things happen in Tshwane when they
happen in Pretoria? They use Tshwane as if it's the city's name, but it
is not. The city is still Pretoria.

I pay my light and water account to the City of Tshwane.
Since about 2001 13 former municipalities merged to form the City of Tshwane,
among them Pretoria, Centurion and Akasia/Soshanguve. Pretoria is no longer a
city, and no longer has a city council. But the Tshwane City Council still
meets in Pretoria City Hall, as far as I know.
I suppose the BBC often refers to events happening in "London" when they
actually took place in Westminster, or some other place. in the vicinity.
It's Murphy's fault!!!
Within a few hours of my posting the reccomendation, Motzarella's servers
went down for the very first time since I have been a user. They're back
again now and definitely open to anybody. There is no connection at all
between Motzarella and any ISP or telecom company anywhere. (I am also not
connected to it in any way - except as a user - can't say "customer" as it
is free.)
SAIX on the other hand is part of Hellkom - 'nuff said!
I accept this. But no one was consulted about renaming the greater
metropolitan Council name. We simply heard that Pretoria was renamed
Tshwane, and it's the most stupid foreign name to be conjured up by that
corrupt ANC government. They should rename the Hennops River to the
Tshwane River (pronounced Swanee), rename the Apies River to
Bobbejane-agter-die-berg-rivier, and so on. Now that Hans Strijdom Drive
in Randburg has been renamed to Malibongwe Drive, I use my Spoonerisms
to change it once again to Balimongwe. Since I met you on za.politics
rather than on any of the others, I'll stay with politics - and say that
I don't trust the ANC as far as I can see them - never have and never
will. The corruption in the current government is a gazillion times
worse than the "corruption" of the previous government.
I am very pleased that Zoo-ma has been told his trial will continue. He
thought he would be let off the hook by the Constitutional Court, not
so, he has still to face corruption and fraud charges - why, he's as
guilty as sin and he knows it.
I sincerely hope that the masses have lost so much faith in the ANC that
next year we will all see a change of government in this country. It
will always be a Black Government because of the legacy we bring with
us, but it could well be a Democratic Alliance Government since the
ANC's promises have proved to be nothing but political posturing and hot
air.
Oh, Roger, that's a great one - HELLKOM - what a hose! Ek't myself
boeglam gelag! Motzarella (if one can excuse the mis-spelling of that
cheese) is great! I managed to register, wait for their confirmation
e-mail,, then joined, and one gets a lot of text sites, no graphics, no
MP3 music, no major download stuff at all. Would be nice if one could
find a place with free downloadable graphics and MP3s, but I guess it
will arrive eventually, like everything else these days, it takes time.
Q
See http://www.hellkom.co.za/ where all will be revealed - it is a "We hate
Telkom" site, brilliant! Telkom has been trying for years to shut it down.
Steve, since changing to Motzarella I have had not one timeout error.
Granted, I cannot download graphics or MP3s, but for text usage, it's
great! Go on, try it. It won't cost you anything and it will definitely
relieve the headaches trying to work with SAIX.

When I got connection errors from SAIX this morning I tried it, but get error
502 messages "Permission denied"
You first have to register a username and password on the website
http://news.motzarella.org and get the correct settings for their NNTP
servers, which do not allow anonymous login.
But one can still use a pseudonym and false e-mail address (as I do)
once the account has been set up. It's your choice.
And I have had only ONE timeout error in the past few weeks of using
Motzarella.
They also appreciate a "Thank You, Motzarella" message.
