It's funny how things work out - things are often quite different from
what you imagined.

The soc.culture.south-africa group, as a high level group is much more
popular than the za.* groups that, sadly, seem to have ended up as
appendages, usually cross-posted from here. I was pleased when I
created the group za.local.cape-town, hoping that our particularly
Kaapenaar concerns and fancies would be attracted. I was wrong,
there's hardly ever been any good local discussion there.

I mention this, because it's interesting to see some extremely local
groups being set up (Ok, not usenet groups, but google groups, google
cleverly, or wickedly depending on your perspective, makes the two
types seem almost the same). I'm interested to see the faltering steps
of our new Observatory neighbourhood watch group. I hope for great
chats from it - already there's a whiff of controversy which I hope
will be amicably resolved as a model for the future, rather turning
into a flame-war (I'm doing my best to achieve this).

Abstract considerations of what people are likely to, or should do, or
want to do, are very different from what people actually end up doing.

Hey Peter!

I would have to share your sentiments, sadly ;-( It would seem that most people are not into sharing, discussing or acknowledging much! Often I watch a friend or colleague show another something "cool" on there PC screen but rarely will they "+1" it or "LinkedIn" it or "Like" it...I often ponder about how much more easier do the programmers and companies need to make it until us Capetonians come to the realization that what Barney (The Purple Dinosaur that is!) says is very true, "Sharing is Caring"! If we just adopted more of this attitude, then groups here set up for us to chat and share in the knowledge & wealth, then that in itself will surely lead to a better environment for all...why we can't see this, I am not certain!?!?

Ciao

p.s. Barney the dinosaur is in fact an SA owned production - did you know that? One of my clients is the owner of this and many other SA bought and owned kiddies educational and very popular cartoon characters! Cool hey!
