Melville Mardi Gras 2000
The Melville Mardi Gras Arts Festival
ART-LOVERS & THEATRE-GOERS IN FOR A TREAT AT THE MELVILLE MARDI GRAS 2000
This year the Melville Mardi Gras will include an Arts Festival that
reflects the Johannesburg's top entertainment area's truly creative nature.
Melville-based artist's collective Rebel Angels have put together a
three-day programme featuring some of the best young South African talent in
film, theatre, music and fine art.
In the interests of enriching the offering to Mardi Gras revellers, the top
floor of Melville's newest restaurant and retail development, The Court, 74
4th Avenue has been made available as the venue for this unique festival.
The programme includes a Film Festival of independent South African short
films, which includes the screening of a number of films that have received
much acclaim at international film festivals.
There is a theatre line-up of note showcasing the prodigious young talents
of the likes of Liz Meiring, Nick Boraine, Gretha Brazelle, Gideon Emery,
Amanda Lane and Anthony Coleman. The programme includes a Thursday night
"Ladies Night" featuring three outstanding one-woman shows. Friday and
Saturday night shows are provoking, funny and supremely entertaining.
Singer, Jenny Delenta will perform songs from her debut album; Ben Kruger
will take a late-night "Stories, Stories" slot and Quenton Zeelie will
perform in a Rebel Angel production, Place To Fail.
There will also be an exhibition featuring fine artists and photographers.
The Melville Mardi Gras Arts Festival is imbued with the spirit of dynamic,
progressive artists collaborating to get their work out in their community.
The result is a programme of fresh, exciting and contemporary works that
contribute a new substance to the Mardis Gras and live up to Melville's
reputation as Johannesburg's premier entertainment area.
