As computers are being used in more and more areas of our society,
dependability and reliability of computers are becoming of increasing
importance in industry as well as our daily life. The consequence of a
computer failure can be a significant economic impact or loss of human
life.
The recently recognised Programme for Highly Dependable Systems (PHDS) at
Wits University aims at promoting the research and application of highly
dependable computer systems and at developing a regional centre of
excellence in South Africa.
Having organised a number of local workshops and conferences in 1997, the
Programme for Highly Dependable Systems will host two international events
at the beginning of 1998.
The IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing)
International Workshop on Dependable Computing and Its Applications will
be held from 12-14 January 1998 at Wits Club Short Course Centre. The
workshop aims at providing a forum for international and local scientists
and engineers to present their latest research findings and application
experience in this rapidly changing field. About 30 overseas experts will
come to South Africa to attend the workshop. Three tutorials and four
invited talks will be given by top scientists during the workshop at Wits.
The workshop is open to all local researchers, designers and users who are
involved with or have interest in computer reliability, safety, security
and quality.
In conjunction with the IFIP workshop, IFIP Working Group 10.4 meeting
1998 will be held in Cape Town from 15-17 January 1998. Twenty six IFIP WG
10.4 meetings have been held since 1981 in various locations, including
USA (11
meetings), France (5), Canada (2), and Italy, Australia, Austria, India,
Japan, Tunisia, England, and Germany (1 each).
