Re: Samaritans/Befrienders in Cape Town?

We are looking for people who have in the past volunteered as Samaritans or
Befrienders, and would like to take part as volunteers in an exciting
project in Cape Town.

The organisation involved is Befrienders International, which represents the
Samaritan movement worldwide. Its role is to develop volunteer action to
prevent suicide through the support of its membership of volunteer-run
centres. These centres offer emotional support to people who are despairing
or suicidal. At present there are 350 such centres in over 40 countries
around the world. Befrienders International is not a religious or political
organisation, and will respond to all callers regardless of their beliefs or
affiliations.

The project in the Western Cape is funded internationally by several donors
and is meant to set up a resource centre for suicide prevention activities
and know-how. It does not intend to duplicate the work of other agencies
working in the province, and will be in consultation with them.

The project was initiated upon invitation from Befrienders South Africa and
is co-ordinated by a National Steering Group.

We are currently looking to recruit volunteers with some befriending
experience, acquired either in South Africa or abroad.

Please write back to us on befri...@dial.pipex.com with your experience,
and how you could contribute to the initiative.

Thank you for reading this posting.
