"Africa Meets Africa"
from the Museum voor Volkenkunde in RotterdamOpens 3 August until 12
September
Visitors will be afforded the opportunity of viewing contemporary
expressions of art against the background of the artistic tradition from
which they have sprung.
The exhibition has been curated by award-winning anthropologist Erna
Beumers. Over 100 great works from western, central and southern
Africa will be on show. The rarity and aesthetic qualities of the
works reflect a century of African creativity and craftsmanship. There
is a significant southern African component to the exhibition, composing
superb examples of wood-carving and textile art. Masizi Kunene, Karel
Nel and Elza Miles, among others, have contributed to the catalogue.

"LINES OF SIGHT:
Perspectives on South African Photography"
12 July 1999 until 31 October 1999
The first in a series of exhibitions which document the development of
photography over the last century. The extensive photographic
exhibition showcases work by some of South Africa's leading
photographers as well as work by enthusiastic amateurs. Aspects of
photography that are readily accessible in libraries or publications
have deliberately been avoided and efforts have been concentrated on
areas where little research has been done.

"THE SIR EDMUND AND LADY DAVIS PRESENTATION"
SA National Gallery Permanent Collection
Important works of British art presented by millionaire mining magnate,
Sir Edmund Davis are on show at the Sang. An exhibition of his 1915
gift to Paris' Luxembourg Gallery is being mounted at the Louvre.
Resident in London for most of his life, Davis stood apart from the rest
of the pretentious and nefarious South African "Randlord" set, with whom
he seldom mixed. Randlord taste was largely motivated by a desire to
acquire the trappings of aristocracy and to have Old masters in gold
frames, whereas the Davis favoured contemporary paintings and works on
paper.

landscape; pictorial and interpretative approaches; different movements
in art history; resistance art; the uses of different media and
art-making techniques, among others.

Teachers are invited to submit the best matric projects on the subject
of Landscape in South African Art, and a selection of these will be
