Dear Arts Editor

Please find herewith press releases as a reminder for the next two
exhibitions at the Durban Art Gallery. Both exhibitions are stunning,
judging by the pictures in their catalogues. The German Expressionists
is a
must for any art student and the Twilight Banners promises to be a riot
of
colour and fun.

The Director and staff of the Durban Art Gallery would be delighted if
you
would join them at the opening of the German Expressionists Exhibition
on
Wednesday June 9 at 18h00. Please RSVP to 300-6238 (acceptances only).

There will be no formal opening for the Twilight Banners exhibition
which
will be on view from Saturday.

GERMAN EXPRESSIONISTS EXHIBITION

An exhibition featuring the works of 16 German expressionist artists who

worked during the years 1911 to 1933 opens at the Durban Art Gallery’s
Circular Gallery on June 9 to run until the end of July.

Titled the Grafik des Deutschen Expressionismus , it is on loan from the

Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen e V in Stuttgart and arranged by the
Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Cape Town.

Among the artists represented are Kirchner, Klee, Kandinsky, Kokoschka,
Marc
and Dix. There will be 121 woodcut prints on display, some as small as
19x20cm, making up a collection that will be of great interest to South
African artists working in the same medium.

The term “Expressionism” was coined by German critics in 1911 to
describe
artists whose inspiration came from their feelings and emotions rather
than
those who followed the Impressionist style of simply copying reality and

imitating nature.

This term came into general use in about 1912 to describe the
representation
of intense emotions in the visual arts of sculpture, painting, drawing
and
printmaking. In the widest sense, it applied to a revolutionary phase of

creative activity between 1910 and 1925 in all the arts.

The Durban Art Gallery is situated on the 2nd floor of the Durban City
Hall
(entrance in Smith Street opposite the Playhouse) and is open seven days
a
week.

BANNERS OF TWILIGHT

Ipopeng, which means `build yourself’ in Northern-Sotho, is a fine art
co-operative based in Mamelodi township in Pretoria that teaches art and

creative skills to young artists and children. Lately, Ipopeng’s
workshops
have focused on special art projects for children from mostly
disadvantaged
backgrounds. One of these projects is the making of wall hangings or
banners
with street children from the Pretoria-Gauteng region.

The resulting dynamic, large, colourful banners have many different
themes
based on the visual material provided and inspired by experiences from
everyday life: mystical animals and figures, urban scenes of houses and
transport, African masks and musicians.

Entitled Banners of Twilight with reference to the `twilight (street)
children’, the wall hangings have been exhibited at the Museum Africa in

Johannesburg and the tourist centre in Pretoria, travelled to Zimbabwe
and
been invited to art festivals in Germany (1995/96) as well as to
institutions in Britain.

In South Africa several wall hangings were exhibited during the Vita
Craft
Now competition at the Durban Art Gallery and the National Cultural
History
Museum, Pretoria.

The Ipopeng spirit returns to the Durban Art Gallery this weekend when
Banners of Twilight opens in the DAG Foyer Gallery on Saturday to run
until
the end of July.

The Durban Art Gallery is situated on the 2nd floor of the Durban City
