The Watercolour Society of South Africa (WSSA) have just held a national
selection for their
60th Open Exhibition. About 250 entries were submitted from
watercolourists all round the country and the five judges on the
Selection Panel had a tough time. The five judges included Riette
Dolezal, AWSSA of Nelspruit, Anita Oliphant, AWSSA from Bloemfontein,
Kathryn van Schalkwyk, AWSSA from Pretoria (former Nelspruit resident),
Diedie Marais, FWSSA from Johannesburg and Mike Edwards of Muldersdrift,
formerley head of Art Department, Pretoria University. The selection
was held at Norscot Manor, where the Society have their headquarters,
and eventually 65 works were chosen.
The judges Highly Commended the following: "Haven of the Wild" by Wendy
Amm, FWSSA, of Durban; and "Woudtoneel" by Kobus Kotze of
Bloemfontein, O.F.S. These two vastly different works show this
difficult medium at its versatile best.
Art lovers will not want to miss viewing this exhibition, which will
have a brief preview at the WSSA Art Gallery at Norscot Manor, Penguin
Drive, Fourways, Sandton, from 2 - 9 SEPTEMBER, 1998, before travelling
to Nelspruit for the official opening. Viewers can look forward to
seeing an interesting display of watercolours. Both the subject matter
and the techniques are extraordinarily varied. A number of well known
Gauteng artists have work on this exhibition.
Hours are 10:00 a.m to 17:00 week days, and 10:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays.
