David Mogano

A collection of watercolour paintings by David Mogano will be on
exhibition at the Standard Bank Gallery, Johannesburg, from 18 July to
28 August 1999.

Phaswane David Mogano was born in Pietersburg in 1932. He received his
schooling at the Mogano Primary and High Schools. During 1959 he
received some informal art training at the Polly Street Art Centre under
Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo.

Mogano has lived in Johannesburg for many years. It is life in the
township and city that appeals most strongly to his imagination and for
which he has become renowned. He handles this subject matter with an
acute sense of detail, with vivid graphic depictions of the physical and
human environment. Social criticism, social documentation, the
integration of traditional and Western modes of dress and dwelling, wit
and humour are injected into the paintings of life in townships from
Pimsville (now destroyed) to Pietersburg, Alexandra, Kgomo City, Early
Western Township and Lebowa.

His paintings are executed exclusively in watercolours, a technique that
he has mastered. The paintings indicate an ingenious drawing ability,
and an idiosyncratic presentation of scale and perspective.

The exhibition reflects the unique vision of an artist over a period of
25 years of painting.

The exhibition has been organized in conjunction with Gallery on Tyrone.

Estelle McIlrath Art School

Standard Bank Gallery

The Standard Bank Gallery will present for the first time an exhibition
of works by young artists from the Estelle McIlrath Art school. The
exhibition will open on Sunday 18th July at 11am downstairs in The Space
at the Standard Bank Gallery.

The Art School, which opened in 1984, gives children aged 3 to 18 years
a perceptually based art programme. Students are given the opportunity
to explore a variety of materials in the art making process. Sculpture
projects involve challenging engineering problems using newspaper, glue,
wire and plaster etc. Objects on exhibition include colourful bowls and
platters, evocative animal masks, Rip van Winkle masks (self-portraits
where students aged themselves 100 years), hats and bonnets from a
bygone era, constructed tea sets and fantastic chairs. Paintings and
drawings will also be exhibited.

The Estelle McIlrath Art School has exhibited at the Rand Afrikaans
University Gallery in 1989 and 1994. In 1989 the Pretoria Art Museum
hosted the Santam Insurance Children’s Art Exhibition; a winning entry
from the Estelle McIlrath School was used on the catalogue, poster and
invitation, and 12 works were sent to Israel for the opening of a
permanent Children’s Art Gallery in Haifa. 12% of the art works
selected to represent South Africa in the 21st World Child Art
Exhibition in Taiwan in 1989 came from this art school.

The exhibition will be on view until 28 August 1999.
