OPPiKOPPi "BUSHVELD BLAST"
7 - 10 AUGUST 1998
Heads up...
After the benchmark festival of festivals hosted by Oppikoppi during
August 1997, it is difficult to imagine adding to the three stages, the
71 bands, the weekend of furious tunes?
However this is exactly what is planned for 1998. Oppikoppi will be
adding another stage, opening a radio station, improving the lighting
rigs and video imaging, adding another 20 bands and organising a proper
long weekend through various intricate governmental connections (Monday
the 10th of August has been declared national "Tunesday".). The
Oppikoppi Bushveld Blast will thus consist of four stages running over
four days.
As was the case during previous festivals the Martell Main stage will
host some of the superstars of South African music. However in keeping
with the musically expanding nature of the festival, this stage will
also see a healthy sprinkling of artists from the non-rock genre. The
legendary David Kramer, Tananas and Koffi, with his band "The cream of
Africa", are examples of the type and calibre of artists the crowd can
expect. Old favourites and demi-legends such as Springbok Nude Girls,
Sons of Trout, Koos Kombuis, Wonderboom, the Usual and others will join
these bands to ensure that the Martell Main stage will feature one of
the most impressive band line-ups ever witnessed at Oppikoppi.
Additionally this stage will be equipped with top quality audio and
visual equipment, resulting in a stage show rarely seen under open
African skies. Martell has also launched a banner competition for this
stage. Banners displaying the Martell logo will be judged and prizes
awarded for the most original ideas.
After initial hesitation to include a jazz stage in a mainly rock
festival, the Savanna Blues & Jazz stage was described by many, as the
jewel of the 1997 festival. This stage will once again see a selection
of the finest African jazz currently on offer. Artists include amongst
others Paul Hanmer, Sipho Gumede and Madala Kunene as well as FNB award
winners Jimmy Dludlu, Vusi Mahlasela and Pops Mohamed with Bruce
Cassidy. In conjunction with the blues bands appearing here, this stage
should be one of the highlights of the festival. 1998 also saw Oppikoppi
and Savanna actively supporting young African jazz bands for the first
time by organising jazz competitions at three jazz venues in
Johannesburg (Kippies, 206Live and Bassline). The winners of these
competitions will also be appearing on this stage and will get the
opportunity to rub shoulders with their older and more accomplished
colleagues. The crafty crew from the Bassline live jazz venue in
Melville will again be responsible for the running of this stage.
The Black Label Campus stage will feature the more uncut alternative
side of the musical spectrum coin thing. This stage has traditionally
featured a mixture of young, up and coming bands together with a fair
amount of more experienced bands. This stage also sees some of the more
hard core musicians strut their stuff. Apart from the artists invited by
Oppikoppi, this stage will host the finals of the Oppikoppi / Caltex /
SL magazine nation-wide campus band competition. The winners of the
various regional finals held in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein,
Durban, Grahamstown, Stellenbosch and Cape Town, will then be playing in
the final competition to determine the national winner. This band will
win not only the cash prize and exposure in the SL magazine, but also an
opportunity to play on the Martell Main stage.
The new dog on the koppie is the Tassenberg Acoustic stage, built on the
only other koppie in the area, this stage will see a selection of
acoustic, solo, cabaret and poetry artists during day time. At night
this stage will be taken over by the dainty dj's from the 206Live venue
in Orange Grove, to ensure that the tunes keep a rollin'.
By adding another stage Oppikoppi is continuing its pursuit of expanding
the musical tastes catered for at the festival. With the quality of
musicianship constantly increasing, this festival promises to be a truly
exceptional musical experience. Apart from the hullabaloo, the brouhaha,
the cacophonic cadenza and the screaming Elvises this festival does
provide a very unique and totally unromantic getaway from city life.
And then some?
Oppikoppi is at present also in hard negotiations with the IBA to try
and obtain a temporary license in order to open an Oppikoppi Radio
station.
This should ensure an entirely new avenue to try and abuse in the
perennial struggle to promote live and original music. The plan is to
link up with 5FM to broadcast sections of the Martell Main stage live
across national radio.
The final Oppikoppi line-up will be made available in the August issue
of SL magazine. This magazine will carry a 32-page excerpt covering the
festival in its entirety.
The organizers also regretfully and respectfully have to decline
entrance to all dogs, irrespective of their age, musical inclination or
sacrificial value.
Fascilities?
Apart from the free camping Oppikoppi also provides showers and toilets.
Several extra showers were built on the existing campsite and more than
a hundred additional toilets will be hired in for the 1998 festival to
keep attendees' eyes tear free. A fairly extensive flea market, which
keeps on growing from year to year, will also make out an integral part
of this festival. The services of Life Rescue Ambulance Services as well
as specialized security personnel will also be utilized for the first
time to attend to all the prospective thorny issue seekers.
Tickets
Tickets will again be available from Computicket at R170 (This excludes
the Computicket fees.) from the beginning of June. Apart from these
venues tickets will also be sold at all Mainline Music outlets in
Pretoria and at the Bassline and 206Live in Johannesburg. This fee
includes four days of camping, toilets, showers and the opportunity to
see almost 90 first-rate Southern African bands in action. Ticket sales
will be restricted in order to be able to provide proper services to all
festival attendees.
Non-smoking children under the age of ten years will be able to enter
for free.
