Hi all,

I am currently piloting a new experiment and having a terrible display lag. I am not sure if it is my programs or a memory issue with Ztree Unleashed. Could anyone help? I would appreciate it.

Best,
Vasudha

Dear Vasudha,

just in case this gives you an idea of how you might get around the
lags, depending on the programming: we've been having similar problems
whenever there was "a lot of" text being displayed as plot text (you
also may try to avoid large tables being sent from zTree to zLeaf and
back). It might be more general than the above (although using plot
graphs per se doesn't seem to cause as much of a problem), but it's not
quite clear yet what exactly is the issue. Urs has identified a zleaf
problem that he will be fixing once he gets the time to do it; whether
that will solve the problem entirely is something that, again, I don't
know... In any case, the issue probably has to do with running all the
leaves on one computer, so running the same programme in the physical
lab usually works (which may or may not be an option for you).

Have a very good weekend,
Irenaeus

Thank you for your response. I do appreciate it. I myself think some of it may be too many if conditions and random number generation within the stage. Also I have a sequential kind of decision screen where the next decision only shows up when the first is taken and a button is clicked so there are a bunch on inputs on one screen. I am going to try moving some of the code to the background hoping that would help.

Thank you!

Hi Vasudha,

This is difficult to diagnose remotely, but you could try running "sudo htop" during a session and looking at the behaviour of the CPUs and RAM. This might give you a hint whether a lot of computation is going on when there are these delays. In any case, I do not believe that RAM is the issue here. A lack of RAM usually leads to crashes, not to delays.

Best,

Max

Thank you for your response Max. Sure I will run this command next time I am testing out the experiment on a bunch of zleafs.

By any chance, do you know how to increase the memory in ZTu while running a session?

Best,
Vasudha

You cannot increase the available memory during a session. But you can do it beforehand by right-clicking on the virtual machine in VirtualBox, going to System and increasing it there. Do not exceed the upper bound of the green area though. If you are already at the upper bound, you would have to add physical RAM to the host first.
