der berühmt berüchtigte HASH-Algorithmus ???

one of my teachers wants me to prepare an essay for our programming lesson.
He wants me to describe the hash-algorithm. "Nothing else", he said. But
after searching the net for a couple of hours i couldn´t find anything
concerning that hash-stuff.
Would be nice of you, if somebody could provide any info.
