I have been told that the connection speed shown in the dialup connection is
not the actual speed. What changes should I made in order to view the actual
speed? Or is there any where else that shows this information?
Thanks for helping.
Btw, my modem is 3com usr 56k voice faxmodem

Correct. Look at different Modem-FAQs for Details (e.g. Les Jones
56k Homepage)

You can look in the System-Monitor of your windows system and when
you go into the command-mode of your modem you can look in the
Modem-Diagnostic via ATI6,ATI11

I use http://homepage.eircom.net/~leslie/testpage.htm in order to check.
It is always slower than the connection speed. For example, my connection
speed today is 44,000 bps while the test shows only 38,000 bps. I also have
a 56k internal modem.

This is the right way to do it. The initial connect speed is shown by
the connect item, and in the event of lost or corrupt packages a lower
speed will be negotiated between the devices. Checking the connect
speed in this way will show what (if?) it has been dropped to. The
speed negotiation only goes down, not up.
