connect PC autodialer to AT&T 7406 telephone

I need help connecting a PC modem to my office telephone. The contact
management software I use will dial the phone number if my modem and
telephone are properly connected.

It's not that I'm unfamiliar with connecting and configuring PC peripherals,
including modems, but I was told that modems cannot be connected to digital
phone systems, and I don't know if that's true or not. I just don't want to
burn up the telephone by plugging a line into a wrong port.
The phone system used where I work is the AT&T 7406 Plus. Any advice or
direction would be appreciated.
