Byproduct: On the excess of Embedded Art Pracitces,
Edited by Marisa Jahn
Published by YYZBOOKS & REV-
ISBN: 978-0-920397-51-0
$29.95

YYZBOOKS is pleased to announce the publication of its latest book, Byproduct: On the Excess of Embedded Art Practices. Byproduct presents texts from a variety of artists, activists, curators, and interdisciplinary thinkers that interrogate projects by cultural practitioners ‘embedded’ in industries, the government, and other non-art sectors. Working with the physical systems and symbolic languages of these institutions, these cultural agents develop projects – or ‘byproducts’ – that produce meaning contingent on their hosts. Whether the works are explicitly polemical or instrumentalized by their hosts is up for debate…

With contributions from Tejpal S. Ajji, IAIN BAXTER&, Claire Bishop, Joseph del Pesco, Kate Henderson, Luis Jacob, Michelle Jacques, Steve Mann, Amish Morrell, Joshua Moufawad-Paul, Darren O'Donnell, Josephine Berry Slater, The Yes Men, Camille Turner, Stephen Wright, and many, many more.

THE TORONTONIANS | DREAM BABY DREAM: INTERROGATED BY TEENS

The Torontonians. Photo Credit: Chozin Tenzin

Parkdale teens interview some of the most important young artists in the city and stream it live to the Internet. No question is too intrusive, no inquiry too personal and no query too prying. The lives of the young artists will be relentlessly interrogated by a bunch of 15-year-olds with absolutely no agenda.

THE TORONTONIANS are a Parkdale-based multidisciplinary collective of teens working in collaboration with Mammalian Diving Reflex. Mammalian Diving Reflex is a research-art atelier dedicated to investigating the social sphere, always on the lookout for contradictions to whip into aesthetically scintillating experiences, producing one-off events, theatre-based performance, videos, installation, theoretical texts and community happenings. Past work includes: Nuit Market, Eat the Street, Haircuts by Children, The Children’s Choice Awards, Slow Dance With Teacher, A Suicide-Site Guide to the City, Monster Makers, The Best Sex I’ve Ever Had and Old Women Shooting Guns.

MAMMALIAN DIVING REFLEX’s work has been presented around the world in Birmingham, Bologna, Brisbane, Brussels, Calgary, Chicago, Cork, Derry, Edmonton, Enschede, Greensboro, Kitchener-Waterloo, Kuopio, Lahore, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Milan, Mumbai, Montreal, Newcastle, New York, Norwich, Nyon Prague, Oldenburg, Oslo, Ottawa, Perth, Portland, Regina, Sydney, Tasmania, Terni, Trondheim, Vancouver and Victoria.

YYZTV opening credits, video still.

Pulled from the archives, YYZ will be screening selected episodes from our 90’s YYZTV program. Launched by YYZ on Maclean-Hunter Cable 10 (now Rogers Communications) in 1992, the show aired once a week in the Parkdale-Trinity area only, and featured film or video artists, who had been selected by the Board of Directors and who were exhibiting concurrently in the gallery. The event will feature video works by various artists and curators.
