Byproduct: On the excess of Embedded Art Pracitces,
Edited by Marisa Jahn
Published by YYZBOOKS & REV-
ISBN: 978-0-920397-51-0
$29.95

YYZBOOKS is pleased to announce the publication of its latest book, Byproduct: On the Excess of Embedded Art Practices. Byproduct presents texts from a variety of artists, activists, curators, and interdisciplinary thinkers that interrogate projects by cultural practitioners ‘embedded’ in industries, the government, and other non-art sectors. Working with the physical systems and symbolic languages of these institutions, these cultural agents develop projects – or ‘byproducts’ – that produce meaning contingent on their hosts. Whether the works are explicitly polemical or instrumentalized by their hosts is up for debate…

With contributions from Tejpal S. Ajji, IAIN BAXTER&, Claire Bishop, Joseph del Pesco, Kate Henderson, Luis Jacob, Michelle Jacques, Steve Mann, Amish Morrell, Joshua Moufawad-Paul, Darren O'Donnell, Josephine Berry Slater, The Yes Men, Camille Turner, Stephen Wright, and many, many more.

YYZ PRESENTS | PAUL BUTLER'S COLLAGE PARTY

Paul Butler’s Collage Party, 2011. Image courtesy of the artist.

A type of experimental studio, The Collage Parties are traveling art events that invite the public to make works in a collective space. These events engage a spectrum of communities, including professional and non-professional artists, adults, teens as well as children. The Collage Parties serve as a source for ideas, inspiration, and connections for everyone involved, opening them to new pathways of artistic growth. Dozens of these events have been hosted across North America and Europe in public museums, commercial galleries, schools, and non-profit art centers.

PAUL BUTLER‘s art eludes definition. It is neither associated with any particular medium, nor is his practice primarily based in the studio. Rather, the creative and conceptual basis of his art includes acts as well as objects: hosting the Collage Party and directing The Other Gallery – a nomadic commercial gallery dedicated to overlooked artists’ practices established in 2001 – are integral to Butler’s creative process. In 2007 he founded the UpperTradingPost.com, an invitational website that facilitates exchange of artworks amongst artists. In 2008 he was invited to lead his Reverse Pedagogy experimental residency at the Banff Centre. He has exhibited his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, University of Toronto; White Columns, New York; Creative Growth Art Centre, Oakland, Jessica Bradley ART + PROJECTS, Toronto; and La Maison Rouge, Paris. Butler has contributed to the book Decentre: Concerning Artist-run Culture (YYZ books, 2008) as well as Hunter + Cook, Bad Day magazine and Canadian Art. Butler will be the Art Gallery of Ontario’s inaugural artist in residence this Fall.

YYZBOOKS SALE | DECENTRE 50% OFF

YYZBOOKS, decentre: concerning artist-run culture | à propos de centres d’artistes (cover).

To celebrate the second collaboration between YYZ Artists’ Outlet and Paul Butler, YYZ will be holding a one-night only sale on decentre, a YYZBOOKS publication in which Butler was a contributor.

DECENTRE is a book about artist-run culture; the efflorescence of projects, spaces, events spawned by artists at their own initiation. We asked artists and others working in artist-run spaces to write short texts addressing the issues we face in this milieu, distilling down the essence of the concept “artist-run” and looking into the future.
