I looked all over in the FAQ and can't find a thing about exporting/importing a project from yWriter to the same version of yWriter. :/ Why is this not addressed anywhere...? I tried doing a brief search of this group but it looked like people were talking about different import/export issues from the one I'm having.

I have yWriter5 installed on my previous laptop. The Cryptovirus struck me and all my files in the projects were corrupted. I turned on an even older laptop and realized I had yWriter5 installed on it as well, and my work--two projects in progress, with numerous chapters, scenes, characters, etc. etc.--were intact on that computer. So I saved the yWriter Projects folders to my flash drive, just in case.

I've installed yWriter5's newest version onto a new laptop (this one) and would like to import all the data from my projects to this new computer. I thought all I had to do was follow the instructions for importing from an older version of yWriter, but yWriter5 is not included in the menu for importing into a new project, since it's yWriter5 I've used on all three computers.

I don't want to use the other listed methods of importing which involve putting in lines of asterisks and whatnot because I simply don't understand it, plus I'm not sure if it'd include all the side information like characters, locations, items, etc. etc. and whatnot. It's more than merely chapters/scenes that I'd like to import, it's the entire projects.

I thought maybe all I'd have to do is just plop the flash drive copy of the yWriter Projects folders onto the hard drive in the same location where it was on the old laptops, and try to open the projects in the new yWriter, but I have the suspicion that won't work, otherwise wouldn't it be in the FAQ?

To be honest, I must have done this already in the past, because I had the same info on two different laptops...but I can't recall how it was done!

Tl;dr, how do I get ALL my old project info from a previous laptop running yWriter5, onto a new laptop also running yWriter5?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if the answer is super obvious. ;_;

You just need to choose open project.  You done need to import it because it is already ywriter5.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I wasn't notified of any responses.

"You just need to choose open project. You done need to import it because it is already ywriter5."

The thing is, the projects I wish to open are from another computer, and aren't currently saved on this new computer, even though it's still yWriter5. (Meaning, I have two yWriter5 programs--the one on the old computer in which I have some saved projects, and the one without any saved projects on the new computer.) There are no projects on this computer for me to open. :/

Do I copy the project folders from the old computer and just put them in the same place (folder) in the yWriter program? Including the backup folders and all?

Yes, copy the project folder, its contents, and all the subfolders and their contents from the old computer to the new one, then open the project in yWriter on the new computer.

For a long time what I did was this. I installed yWriter5 the program on several computers I used. Just the program. When I started a project I would create it on a flash drive that I designated for writing use, or I would copy the project files to a folder on that flash drive. After that, I would insert the flash drive on whatever computer I was using, click on the project .yw5 file, and edit the project from whatever computer I was using. I always had the project with me on the flash drive.
Now, I do the same thing, but I put all my projects in Dropbox. I also do backups to a flash drive. Still works about the same way. The actual program is on the computer, the project is in Dropbox.

It should be mentioned that it is usually best to COPY the folder out of
dropbox as you work on it, the save it back. The reason being that
sometimes the autosaves that ywriter does can mess things up. I
wouldn't trust it unless I was saving out then back in, and not using a
"live automatic save" to drop box.

I also would suggest that if one is moving around to a lot of computers,
and you have the space, put the install file of ywriter on the USB drive
as well. Then you are sure to have everything you need. Of course if
you only work on your own computers this is not necessary. It also is
questionable if you use other's computers, they may not let you install
programs. Depends on the situation

Hi:

Sorry to necro-post, but a question: William, are any of the computers that you are using Win8 tablets?  I'm struggling with YWriter because the file structure for "Dropbox" for Win8 tablets is construed to be a "mobile" device, so the files (unlike a desktop DB) aren't actually "on" the computer, where they appear to be. YWriter can't find the corresponding files, so I can't open a project.

I'm getting sort of frustrated with the whole thing--I write extensively on two computers; my Win7 desktop and my Win8 laptop.  None of the programs I use (the elephant's graveyard of stuff I've used and still have bits and pieces of this plot element or that outline here and there) all seem to go bonkers on the Win8.  I've tried keeping the software and projects across a LAN, but that only works as long as BOTH computers are up and running--not ideal. YWriter, which I love, can't "see" the Win8 project, if it's in Dropbox.  I tried keeping it in OneDrive, and for some reason, that's not working, either.  (Don't know the "why" on that one, as the folder structure SEEMS normal, but then again, who knows?).  I've tried so many things I now have WIP detritus in 10 places (or so) and it's making me antsy.

I'm not a big thumbdrive person. Anyone else run into this, and have decent solutions?  (I have Snowflake Pro, YWriter and I have some outlines in LSBXE [utter waste of dough] that I want to hold onto and use in both computers until I get the scenes written).

TIA,
Hitch

I use a MS Surface Pro. I don't have this problem however, to avoid potential problems like this, you may want to keep the files in a local folder and then move them to the dropbox or one drive folder when you're done for upload. Using active files in an automatically updating folder can cause corruption.

Hi, Michelle:

Is your Dropbox a MOBILE app or is it the desktop app?  Or are you synching/saving to a different cloud storage system?  It took me a while to figure out why the Dropbox wasn't working, and it's because the Win8 OS on the Yoga Thinkpad Pro laptop only uses the MOBILE app, as though the laptop is a phone. The directory file structures aren't the same, and aren't as they "appear."  Same problem with some other software/websites; literally won't ALLOW me to go to a given website, insists I have to download the damn app. It's frustrating as hell.

I'd tried to avoid keeping two local copies of the same WIP, as that seems like a recipe for disaster, really.  My entire company lives/dies on Dropbox, 24/7--we have hundreds of thousands of files, many being actively worked on while in the DB-and maybe we're just lucky, but we've never had a problem with data collision or anything else.

Is this too simple? Get an Android tablet and use Google Drive with In Sync to maintain files locally and synch with cloud?

Sorry?  You want me to nuke my 6-m.o. Win8 Thinkpad Yoga tablet, so I can use YWriter?  FWIW, if I want to keep a set of files locally and then just copy them to the cloud, I can do that now.  My point was about hot-synching with a cloud service with live files. (And, I have several Droid Tablets, as well as an iPad [IMHO, worthless for working of any kind] and the Win8 laptop).

Thanks.
