On the topic of special characters I often have this problem . Once you know the number of the special character, you can enter it by pressing
ALT +0###
Where ### is the number. On the PC, it is  only workable if you use the keypad.

To avoid this, I keep a list of special characters handy. Usually on a personal web page on my computer. Just copy one and paste it.  This is my go to list:
  –  ° ‘ — ’ —  § “ … ” ¸ ≠   ÷ ± ⅓ ⅔  ¼ ½ ¾ • ⅕   ‰  ‱ `  ´
Φ Ω Σ π
  € ¥  £ ¢

    à á   è é  Ñ ñ   æ  ƒ   † ‡  Æ ç    ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ⁰

ʳᵈ ˢᵗ ᵗʰ ⁿᵈ ® © ™ ℗

some of these need explaining.
‰  ‱ `  ´  Used in statistics.  This is actually the first time I have used the one on the right.
—  An M dash.
  ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ⁰These are super script for exponents.
“ ”   Left and right smart quotes.
…  this is an ellipse. It is one character.
® Registered Trademark
©  Copyright. (using (c) actually has no legal standing --so far.)
 ™  trademark.
℗   Audio copyright. (Used for CD recordings.).
æ   This is called an "ash." I only use it when quoting a like that has that character. (Old gravestones for example.)
When using trademarks it is only necessary to put the mark on the first use.

Feel free to copy these and keep them handy.

I fond myself doing that too, I find a "work around" using the MS PowerToys in Windows since I use a keyboard without the numpad.

Or you could just use the Character Map utility that has been included
in Windows since at least Windows 3.11.
