While you're waiting for a response from someone who actually knows something (grin), let me say that I think I remember someone reporting a problem with the new project wizard under Mono a while back.  Instead of using the wizard, try just using the Create Empty Project option, and then manually adding the other information.  If that works, you can at least get started on your writing while you wait.

Disclaimer: I run yWriter on Windows and know absolutely nothing about running it on Macs or Linux other than what I've picked up while sitting on the sidelines here.

Okay, so I wanted to install yWriter on my Mac. I found the Wiki, and did what it told me to do. I have yWriter now, but there's a problem. I'll open it up, click 'New project wizard' and get going. Once I've finished with that, I go to make a new chapter, but all the options are greyed out. Same with scene, characters, locations, and items. To top it off, on Terminal I get this message: "<Error>: kCGErrorCannotComplete: CGSDeviceSynchronize: Invalid device window" At least twenty times, one after another. I can't do anything but write the description down at the bottom of the main screen. Help?

It's a Mono bug and they're not interested in fixing it. I'm stuck until they do.

The only thing I can suggest is to run yWriter in a Windows emulator, or run Wine and install the proper dotnet 2.0 runtime.

Simon,
I'm a Windows user, but I've been impressed with the amount of effort you have gone through to make your application available to Wine and Mono users.  I understand you are mostly relying on their ability to run .net, but I thought I'd let you know about an alternative BASIC that compiles to both Linux and Mac, in case you wanted to write a native workaround for these kinds of problems.

I don't particularly like the syntax, but some do.  It's called purebasic:  http://www.purebasic.com/

I found it too different from my other dialects to warrant the learning curve, but at 79 Euro's I thought you might want to give it a peek (if you haven't already.)

I have looked at other IDEs and languages over the years, but I'm currently writing in VB2010 (although yWriter is still 2008), and the way ahead for me has to be dotnet 3.5 and/or 4.0. I don't think either are mono compatible, which is the only reason I'm still compiling against dotnet 2.0

By the way, it took me 3-4 years to convert all my code from VB6 to VB2008, and I still have two apps which aren't finished. Converting that lot again to another language, even a similar one, just isn't going to happen.

I stopped upgrading vb after vb6 because of the issues required by upgrades.  My main platform is IBM midrange and I'm more accustomed to languages retaining compatibility with prior versions.

I feel your pain.

Please excuse me while I hijack this thread:

John, are you saying there's another RPG programmer besides me harassing Simon? <grin>

So, written any good matching records programs lately?

LOL, actually, I'm broader based than that, including COBOL, SQL and lately C++ on the midrange.  But, RPG was first (back in the S/3 days.)  So you are not alone.

BTW, for any lurkers to this hijacking, we are not talking about Role Playing Games.

I've never played with C++, and rarely have to deal with COBOL, since that's Somebody Else's Job here <grin>.  We use a lot of SQL, plus I've been messing with Oracle on Windows servers for a few years now, so I have to keep straight which dialect I'm using at any given moment.

S/3, eh?  I entered IS on a S/38, after bouncing around among IBM and Burroughs mainframes and Data General and DEC minis during my earlier life as an engineer.  Going from FORTRAN/BASIC/COBOL to RPG was a bit of a shock, but that was a long time ago.
